UP Skills for Work comes to Lethbridge Public Library

At the Lethbridge Public Library, books are not the only way visitors can learn. In fact, the library has a suite of adult literacy programs, and this fall, it will add UP Skills for Work to its schedule.

The Lethbridge Public Library’s Read On Adult Literacy program has been in operation since 1981, offering services both in branches and in the community. UP Skills for Work, which teaches employability skills like accountability and motivation through nine workbooks, will be offered through the library’s partnerships with local food banks and Aboriginal employment centres.

“We want the library to be seen as connecting outwards to the community,” said Lil Radley, Lethbridge Public Library’s Coordinator of Literacy Services. “Having the workbooks allows us to take the program out into the community, where learners are most comfortable.”

Last year, over 400 learners used the library’s adult literacy programs. Radley says that improving their employability skills and finding employment are important goals for many learners. UP Skills for Work’s use of clear language and a teaching model that can be adapted to any learning environment, makes the program ideal for Lethbridge’s learners, who may be short on time or feel intimidated in a classroom.

“We strive to make learning accessible at any level of literacy,” said Mack Rogers, Executive Director of ABC Life Literacy Canada. “UP Skills for Work is designed to help learners gain confidence and develop important transferrable skills that will support them through all stages of their working life.”

“I think the program is a step forward for ABC,” Radley concluded. “It recognizes the needs of low-literacy learners across the country.”

UP Skills for Work was designed by ABC Life Literacy Canada with support from founding sponsor Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life. The first three workbooks will be available this fall, with another three being released each year for the next two years. Find out more at upskillsforwork.ca.
